The Tibetan bowls and the gong
Tibetan bowls
There is much mystery surrounding the origin of Tibetan singing bowls and little is known about them. There are wonderful stories and different opinions, but their exact origin has not been confirmed. It is believed that they date back 4000 years, although
there is no certainty about this. What is known is that they were used by Buddhist monks in meditation ceremonies and as healing tools.
The first singing bowls were made in the homes of artisans and this knowledge was passed down from generation to generation. Over the years, the use of Tibetan singing bowls has spread throughout the Western world as a powerful tool for meditation and relaxation.
Today, Tibetan singing bowls are handmade in the Himalayan regions, especially in Nepal, Tibet, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan, and are made from an alloy of 5 to 9 metals such as copper, silver, lead, tin, iron, zinc, nickel, mercury and gold. Each bowl is unique in its shape, size, thickness, and design, which influences its sound and effects.
Today, the mystical sounds of singing bowls can be heard in many different places, such as healing centers, yoga studios, temples, and more. Bowls are undoubtedly as powerful a spiritual, medicinal, and musical tool as they were thousands of years ago.
Different uses
There is a wide variety of Tibetan bowls, but we can group them into three types:
meditation bowls, singing bowls, and healing bowls.
They all have a fundamental note and a great wealth of harmonics, thus generating a series of sounds that respect the harmonic scale studied by Pythagoras in the West.
These harmonic frequencies are emitted together when playing the bowl, and therefore, when listening to them, we quickly enter a state of relaxation.
